With several invasions and settlements of travellers from across the world in India, our rich and diverse heritage has a touch of foreign influences. Take Mumbai, for instance. The most famous street food, vada pav has two essential components which were brought to India by the Portuguese i.e. pav and potatoes. Similarly, some Portuguese settlers like Vasco De Gama brought with him a hoard of spices and vegetables to the Indian soil via Goa in 1498.

Popular Goan Recipes

A largely diverse population, consisting of Hindu Saraswat, Muslim and Christian communities, the Goan cuisine is defined by a melange of flavours of the Portuguese and these local communities. Beef and pork were introduced to the coastal region by the Portuguese and today we have some of the most famous Goan dishes like pork vindaloo and beef vindaloo being cooked with them. Apart from this, a variety of seafood curries are also popular in Goa.

Goan Recipes For Breakfast

Goan fare is a great mix of meats and vegetables. One popular street food that is also a breakfast recipe in the region is the ros omlette. The specialty of this omlette lies in the fact that a spicy vegetable-loaded egg omlette is dunked in a thick and saucy gravy, made from onions and tomatoes. Another delicious item is the baji pav. A flavourful stew of vegetables is served with a soft and spongy bread called pav.

Goan Recipes For Lunch

Rice and pav are two common side dishes that are served along with curries. Goan fish curry and goan prawn curry are some of the most flavourful dishes from the fare. Usually paired with rice, these dishes are filling and wholesome.

Goan Recipes For Dinner

The top picks for dinner would prawn balchao, chicken cafreal, chicken xacuti and a plethora of dry and gravy-based dishes that are a confluence of local and foreign flavours. A number of times, parottas are also served along with these dishes.
