STEP 1.In a pressure cooker add 1 cup washed yellow split moong dal, 1 inch ginger finely chopped, 1 tomato finely chopped, 2 tsp turmeric powder and salt to taste. For a thinnerdal add 2 ½ cups of water for 1 cup of dal.

STEP 1.Pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles and turn off the heat and allow the pressure to release naturally.

STEP 1.If all the water had been absorbed by the dal add more water into the cooker to adjust the consistency and give it a light mash. Add chopped coriander leaves as required and add the juice of 1 lemon. Keep aside.

STEP 1.For the tadka , in a preheated pan add 1 tbsp ghee, 2 tsp cumin seeds and 4 cloves garlic sliced. On medium heat saute the garlic and cumin in the ghee for about 1 minute till the aroma of the garlic is released. Add 2 slit green chillies and ¼ tsp asafoetida.

STEP 1.Serve the dal in a bowl and spoon the tadka over it.
