Blair Bowman, then a student at Scotland's University of Aberdeen, launched World Whisky Day in 2012. The inaugural observance began with 20,000 individuals participating in over 180 events throughout the world, and was supported by various Scottish organisations, including the Scottish Government. World Whisky Day falls on May 16, 2026, worldwide with tastings, events, and gatherings where people gather with friends or attend parties to drink whisky. They can drink it straight or mix it into a classic whisky cocktail like a Whisky Sour, Manhattan, or Old Fashioned. Whisky stores conduct whisky tastings, distilleries provide tours, provide unique discounts and samples, and introduce new whiskies.

Bars and restaurants hold tastings and create separate whisky menus to celebrate the day, but no country drinks to it quite like India. The country is the largest consumer of whisky in the world, with some 219 million bottles consumed in a single year. The relationship runs deep since whisky arrived with the British, stayed for the parties, and never left. Bollywood cemented the love affair, with Hindi cinema depicting whisky as the drink of drama, desire, and celebration for decades. But India ultimately stopped drinking the world's whisky and began responding to it. Indian single malts began to dominate the world arena, with distilleries in Bangalore, Goa, and the Himalayas producing whiskies that reflect the warmth and complexity of the region. India's tropical heat speeds maturation dramatically; one year in an Indian barrel is about comparable to three in Scotland, resulting in spirits that are younger in age but stunningly certain in flavour.
So if you're looking to celebrate World Whiskey Day 2026 with something that speaks to the world but pours from India, here are the best bars in India putting whisky exactly where it belongs, front and centre.

The Junction, Taj Bengal, Kolkata
Listed by many as one of the top eight whisky bars, it thrives on its collection, including Single Malt Lagavulin 16 years, Cragganmore 12 years, Dalwhinnie 15 years, and Johnnie Walker Platinum Label 18 years, among its many other exceptional single malts available in this vast array of rare whiskies. Its main attraction is the Taj Hotel's Signature Private Reserve, with Macallan 21 Year Old, the hotel's own Private Label, adding to the overall selection of 76 whiskies. A worthy feature is the 'Burning of ice', which is frequently performed for state guests and royalty, while Schott Zwiesel's clear crystal glassware is used for many of the pours. Rare whiskies are served in broad-based, extra-large, old-fashioned glasses to distinguish them from ordinary whiskies and highlight the drink's refinement.

Amber Terrace, The Leela Palace, Jaipur
The Leela Palace Jaipur is all ready to boost the ante on World Whisky Day 2026 with the Amber Terrace. The location in the country’s pink city, the crown jewel of The Leela Hotels, Places, and Resorts, is focusing more on a refined whisky experience. The standout is a whisky cocktail named Pearl Dusk by Chirag Panchal featuring a whiskey highball created with barley-infused bourbon, apricot-orange beer, passionfruit, cinnamon, and ginger beer. It's malty, lightly spiced, citrus-bright, and built to be sipped slowly while the sky changes colour. The roasted barley and millet give it a toasted depth that a regular highball simply doesn't have. Whisky-focused cocktails follow the ‘Root to Fruit’ concept with roots, bark, leaves, flowers, and fruits that include vetiver, neem, jamun, and babool bark that most cocktail menus wouldn't know what to do with.

This idea also carries into the cocktail programme, with six drinks in total, two each inspired by the three regions. The Hood has selected a collection of whisky-based experiences, ranging from timeless classics to avant-garde hallmarks, whether you like the smokey depth of a traditional float or the inventive layers of Japanese-inspired umami. Inspired by the vivid energy of Nishiki Market, the Beware the Ginza Tiger is a dark Japanese harmony with miso-washed whisky, roasted coffee liqueur, and the distinct sweetness of sesame-kokuto sugar syrup. The Roman Holiday, a highlight of their Summer Cocktail Collection, achieves a delicate, dessert-like balance by combining silky whisky with a vibrant trio of citrus and soft honey water.

Harbour Bar, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai
In a city that never stops moving, Harbour Bar has been holding its ground since 1933 and somehow, that stillness is exactly the point. One of Mumbai's most storied addresses, it sits with its back to the chaos and its face to the Arabian Sea. Take a seat by the window and order The Macallan 21 Year Old Private Label, a drink that deserves exactly this view. In a pub this ancient, in a city this relentless, that feels like a modest, required act of sanity rather than a choice.
