For those with keen eyes, it is quite easy to catch that the cup of ice cream Masaba Gupta is indulging in is from Nirula’s. In a recent post of social media, Masaba Gupta shared that she is in Delhi, and when in the national capital, her go-to place for ice cream and other delicacies is the iconic Nirula’s. The fashion designer shared a screenshot of her Nirula’s order, which consisted of Nutty Buddy and Hot Chocolate Fudge. “Why is Nirula’s default setting in my brain when I land here?” she thoughtfully asked herself in the post.

For those unaware and missing out on how iconic Nirula’s is for the foodies of Delhi, the first thing to know about the place is that it is famous as the capital’s first fast food restaurant. The seeds of the chain called Nirula’s was first laid down by the Nirula brothers, Laksmi Chand and Madan Gopal in 1934, who started Hotel India in Connaught Place as a restaurant and bar. In the 1940s, the family opened a coffee shop and in the 1950s, they started Delhi’s first Chinese restaurant too.

It was only in 1977 that Deepak Nirula, a scion of the family, started Nirula’s as Delhi’s first fast food restaurant with an ice cream parlour that boasted of 21 flavours. Apart from their ice creams, Nirula’s is known for offering other fast food dishes that Delhiites have loved for decades now, including burgers, pizzas, submarine sandwiches, salads and pastries. So, Masaba Gupta’s love for the ice cream from this iconic Delhi culinary landmark is quite justified.
