All That Matars: 5 Peas-y Breakfast Recipes That You Should Try

While the world is whipping up fancy breakfasts, you can always go back to your matar. Matar aka peas are a delicious vegetable that looks like a tiny ball. The soft and sweet bites can be popped into the mouth after cooking as a subzi but one can also mash and squish it to make breakfast treats. The benefits of green peas are immense, as they are a good source of plant protein and aid digestion too. 

While making your breakfast paratha or sandwich, have you ever gotten confused about what fillings to add? Green peas can come to your rescue then. The peas can be dunked in any of these dishes and lend a sweet and creamy touch to it. Since breakfast is the first meal of the day, one would want to make it nutritious so what better way than adding a healthy veggie like peas to it. 

Here are a few easy peas-y breakfast recipes that you can try at home. 

1.  Matar Paratha 

This is super easy to make. All you need are some peas. Boil them and mash them with spices like salt, chilli powder and cumin seeds. Mix it well and stuff it in the paratha dough. Roll it out and toss on a tawa. Once it is crispy, top with butter and pair with pickle to enjoy. This is a filling breakfast idea that can be made once or twice a week. 

2.  Matar Poha 

A classic Maharashtrian breakfast treat, poha is made of beaten rice. It is usually packed with a variety of vegetables like kanda poha (onions), batata poha (potatoes) and more. This time, load up your breakfast poha with matar. The green peas lend a tinge of sweetness to the dish and make it wholesome. You can top it with some coriander leaves.

3.  Matar Dhokla 

The soft and spongy, squared-shaped bites from Gujarat are heavenly breakfast cum snack items. While dhokla is usually made with a combination of dal and beasn, you can opt for matar this time. The green peas, paired with sooji, form the fermented batter of dhokla. The dish turns out super green, soft and healthy. Temper with mustard seeds, accompanied by green chillies. 

4.  Matar Cutlets 

The round-shaped crispy cutlets can be made with a variety of ingredients. One of them are peas. The green cutlets are made with matar, that are mashed and mixed with grated mozzarella cheese and shaped with the palm of the hand. These are then shallow-fried and served hot with mint chutney and tomato ketchup. 

5.  Matar Masala Sandwich 

The matar masala is prepared by mixing green peas with chopped onions, tomatoes and a host of spices like garam masala and fennel seeds. This mixture is then tossed in a pan and layered on a slice of bread. You can cut in into two halves or toast it in a sandwich maker and enjoy. Add some coriander leaves in the mixture for freshness.
