It is difficult to look past the massive shift towards a cruelty-free lifestyle that people around the world are opting for. While India is one of the nations with the most number of vegetarians, the increase in popularity of veganism has made us look at jackfruit and soya also in a whole new light. Many of our favourite Bollywood stars have also been rather vocal about giving up on meat, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recognizes these celebrities every year with special honours. This year actress Bhumi Pednekar and actor Akshay Kumar were named The Most Beautiful Vegetarians of the year by PETA. Actors like Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor and Sonu Sood have also been honoured by PETA before as 'Hottest Vegetarians'.

On Thursday, Bhumi Pednekar took to Instagram to thank PETA for the honour. Bhumi, who has also been an active climate warrior, often speaks about the adverse effects of things we do on climate at large. She turned vegetarian recently about a year ago.

Vegetarianism, veganism, plant-based diet may appear the same, but they do vary greatly. For instance, a vegetarian person would abstain from meat, but he/she will have no qualms about eggs and dairy products like milk, cheese, paneer. A Vegan on the other hand, along with meat and eggs, would also do away with all dairy too since they are retrieved from animals, so he/she would resort to dairy substitutes like soy milk, almond milk etc. A plant-based diet is where most of your food is derived from plant-based sources. The diet focuses on all things natural, as opposed to synthetic or heavily processed food items. It is not necessarily vegan, people who follow plant-based diet may have eggs or animal products, but the chances of that are very limited.
