Hamburger Steak Recipe

Recipe By Slurrp

A Japanese hamburger steak is also known as Hambagu is a juicy steak patty that is typically made with ground beef, Japanese panko breadcrumbs and sauteed onions. The patties are also topped with a tangy and eclectic sauce made of Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. It is a single serving of a juicy, tender patty loaded with sweet and spicy sauce served with the side of some fresh veggies.

Hamburger is a snack you typically associate with the United States, where a thick, dense meat patty is served with two buns. Hambagu, is a type of Yoshuku, a cuisine comprising foods that are a blend of Western and Japanese styles, other notable Yoshuku foods are Omurice (omelette-rice) and Naporitan (Neopolitan) Spaghetti.

Until after World War II, meat was not widely available in Japan. However, during 1950's and 60's, Hamburger steaks emerged as an economical way to mix meat such as beef and pork with other ingredients like breadcrumbs, onions, and eggs. After World War II, due to the US military's presence, hamburgers had anyway entered Japan. The naval officers would often go into town during their time off and enjoy their Hamburgers, and the concept caught on like a house of fire. And it was only a matter of time for Hambagu to take over the streets of Japan.

With this recipe, you can make authentic Japanese-style hamburger steaks.
