India Ordered 137 Biryanis Per Minute In 2022, Reveals Report

If there’s anything that boomed during the pandemic, and has remained on a constant rise it has to be the food delivery business. While the hospitality and dine-in sector may have been hit, foodies all over the country relied on food deliveries to satiate their cravings. And ever since then, food delivery has become a very essential part of our daily lives. Indian foodies have a number of favourite foods that are the top-ordered on food aggregator applications every year, but there’s one which never fails to beat them all and remain a top rank holder – the evergreen biryani!

Food delivery platform Swiggy just released the 7th edition of their annual trends report and yet again, biryani has emerged victorious! As per the report, chicken biryani has topped the list as the most-ordered dish on the app, and this isn’t the first but for the seventh time in a row. And can you iamgine how many biryanis were ordered? "The dish showed its 'asli dum' with a mind-boggling 137 Biryanis being ordered per minute; that's 2.28 Biryanis per second," read the report by Swiggy shared on Thursday.

Following chicken biryani was masala dosa, chicken fried rice, paneer butter masala and butter naan amongst the top five most-ordered items on Swiggy. While these were the desi favourites, international flavours also made it to the list as Indian foodies also ordered dishes like sushi, Mexican bowls, Korean ramen and Italian pasta along with the all-time favourite pizza.

Popcorn rules the list for late-night cravings, with more than 22 lakh orders placed post-10 pm. Wondering what was for dessert? Gulab jamun emerged as the favourite with 27 lakh orders in 2022.

It seems like desi khana ruled the roost as Indians noshed upon samosas for snacks. The deep-fried treat was the top-ordered snack on Swiggy with over 40 lakh orders, and was followed by pav bhaji, French fries, garlic breadsticks and hot wings.

But what came as a revelation was that not all orders or the food trends were about junk food or unhealthy treats. Interestingly, the report observed a rise in users opting for clean eating and ordering organic fruits and vegetables on Swiggy’s grocery delivery platform. Over 50 lakh kilograms of organic fruits and vegetables were sold on the app. Exotic fruits such as Dragon Fruit, Pomelo, Berries, and Wood Apple found love too with over 17 lakh kilograms of exotic fruit being sold. The healthiest eaters came from Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Pune. The food delivery platform also saw an increase in searches for healthy, guilt-free food queries on the app by 23% this year.

The company in a statement revealed some of their quirky trends as well and said “We noted some quirky search trends on Instamart including petrol, mommy, sofa, beds, underwear and more. We get it, and we’ll try bringing some of these to you next year maybe. To the 55,000 users who searched for Swiggy and Instamart on Instamart- you’re always on our minds too.”
