While baking cakes at home, I use multiple things to decorate them. These include edible glitter dust, which enhances the beauty of the baked goodies. In addition, I often use food colouring to deck up cakes, which can be made at home using fruit and vegetable juices. But people tend to get confused about edible glitter dust. But if you avoid using chemical-rich stuff in the market, you can easily make it at home as it’s cheap; it does not require many ingredients but needs a little effort. So, here’s how you can make glitter dust and use it to decorate your cakes at home.

Ingredients:

  1. Gel food colour - 2 to 3 drops
  2. Cornflour - 2 tsp
  3. Water - two cups
  4. OHP sheet

How to make edible glitter without gelatin?

  1. Put a pan on the stove, add water and put cornflour in it. After mixing, add the remaining water and make a thin paste to be cooked well. In the beginning, keep the flame of the gas low, but later, you can make it high. Keep stirring it to avoid lumps.
  2. The cornflour cooks in two or three minutes, but making edible glitter dust will require a longer cooking time. First, boil it while constantly stirring till it becomes a thin paste; now cook for about 4 to 5 minutes.
  3. After turning off the gas, keep this mixture in a separate bowl and mix two or three drops of gel food colour in it. If you want to make glitter in different colours, mix different gel food colours in each bowl. Mix the cornflour mixture well with the help of a spoon and make sure that it doesn’t cool down, or there may be trouble completing the other process.
  4. After mixing the colour, spread this mixture on the OHP sheet. Keep the sheet in front of the fan or the sun to dry. Take it out of the OHP sheet within 5 or 10 minutes and keep it on a plate. Now, please put it in the mixer to make powder. Remember your hands shouldn't be wet; otherwise, they may stick.

Homemade glitter dust will look precisely like the glitter you get in the market. You can use it to decorate cakes or cupcakes etc. If you want, you can also store it in an airtight container and reuse it when needed.
