During my early years, I would eagerly wait for the kabuli pulao and chicken shami kebabs that my friend Armaan used to bring on the occasion of Eid. All our friends used to empty Armaan’s lunch box within minutes. During the festival, people prepare and serve different kinds of dishes that include sheer khurma, shahi tukda, kabuli pulao and chicken shami kebab. This Eid, let’s try some unique dishes and enjoy them with our family and friends.

  • Chicken Shami Kebab: How can one miss kebabs on the occasion of Eid and that too chicken shami kebab! During the festival, this Mughlai starter is prepared in almost every home. Apart from chicken, mutton shami kebabs are also eaten with great zeal. Kebabs made using chickpeas are offered to vegetarians. Juicy chicken pieces are chopped and mixed with chana dal and spices. Their tikkas are made and fried till they become crispy. Don’t forget it is easy to make this recipe at home.
  • Kabuli Pulao: This pulao is included in the main course. It is called pilaf in Afghanistan and other central Asian countries. It can be made in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions by adding various dry fruits. For example, you can serve it by adding pomegranate, carrot, beans etc.
  • Phalsa Sorbet: It is given to the people at the end of the meal. A sip of this tasty and classic sherbet will refresh you, fill your stomach as well as help to digest your food. Don’t believe us? Then try it yourself and see how tempting it is for your tastebuds.
  • Sheer Khurma: Eid seems impossible without sheer khurma or sheer korma. It is a type of vermicelli, specially prepared on the occasions of Eid and Ramzan. It is made from saffron milk, dry fruits like almonds, cashews, raisins and dates. To add a different taste, you can also add kewra essence or rose water, changing both the flavour and aroma of the whole sheer khurma.
  • Shahi Tukda: This is a bread-based dessert recipe. Besides Eid, you can also make it on the occasion of Holi and Diwali. Bread pieces are fried in pure desi ghee, soaked in sugar syrup and then rabri is poured over it.

Apart from Eid, you can also try these dishes at your home on the coming weekend.
