Kahlua is known to be a versatile star in several delicious cocktails across the world. It is a brand of liqueur made with rum, sugar, and arabica coffee. It originated in Mexico and translates to "house of the Acolhua people" in Veracruz Nahuatl. It is made from Arabica coffee beans along with alcohol that is extracted from sugarcane. One batch takes about seven years to make!
While there are many stories about how Kahlua came into being, one draws a connection to the Arabic word "Kahwa," meaning coffee. In the 1940s, when Kahlua made its way to the US, it became one of the most loved liqueurs in the country, and various bars started to create some amazing cocktails with it. While the coffee liqueur can be sipped as is over ice, it is best enjoyed shaken up in cocktails like the Brave Bull, Black Russian, etc., and a lot of people who love to experiment also add it to a host of sinful desserts.
If you, too, are a Kahlua fan, we’ve got you covered with some of the best cocktails to stir up right here.
1. White Russian
This iconic yet simple and easy cocktail is made by stirring Kahlua, vodka, and cream. While this creamy coffee-flavored drink is suitable for any occasion and season, it is best served before or after dinner.
2. Mudslide
The classic boozy cocktail, the mudslide, is sweet, creamy, and rich; it's like dessert in a glass. It was born in the 1970s at Wreck Bar in Rum Point Club on Grand Cayman Island when a customer wanted a White Russian and the bar tweaked the recipe to feature Irish cream. The simple drink was an instant hit, and today it is popular as a drink that is perfect to end an evening.
3. Espresso Martini
A classic drink invented by British bartender Dick Bradsell at Fred’s Club in London, the Espresso Martini uses only three ingredients: vodka, espresso, and Kahlua, adding a rich coffee flavour to the vodka and resulting in a caffeinated drink that is balanced with just the right ratio of booze, coffee, and sugar.
4. B-52
Traditionally made with Kahlua, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Grand Marnier, the drink looks divine when it is properly made. The layers separate because of their differing densities, forming colourful bands inside the glass.
5. Colorado Bulldog
Quite similar to the White Russian, the Colorado Bulldog is made with Kahlúa, vodka, heavy cream, and cola. It offers a balanced flavour since cola and coffee are known to be natural companions.
