Vermicelli, for the unversed, are a popular kind of extremely thin rice noodles which are commonly used in Asian cooking. Also called seviyan, I had thought that vermicelli could only be used as a dessert ingredient for kheer. Kheer, for those untouched by the phenomenon, is a milky Indian pudding that is sweet. It was only sometime back that I learned about vermicelli being a great savoury snack item too. A friend of mine brought a spicy vegetable vermicelli and I can't say I didn't like it. However, if you're still stuck at kheer wali seviyan, there are plenty of other desserts you can make with vermicelli too. Here are some of them to try.
Pineapple Vermicelli Halwa
Easy to make and fruity in taste, this halwa is all things tasty and nutritious.
Vermicelli Kheer
Made with seviyan or vermicelli, kheer is the most commonly made dessert using this ingredient.
Creamy Vermicelli Pudding
Roasted nuts dunked in a ghee-laoded creamy pudding with soft vermicelli mixed in it.
Vermicelli kesari/semiya kesari
A soft and sweet South Indian favourite, kesari is twisted here to be made with vermicelli.
Mango vermicelli payasam with ice cream
A heavenly and filling shake cum dessert, this sweet is fruity and chilled.
