Ultra-aged spirits, mainly the single malt scotch, have quite a vast market. Recently, the Macallan approaching 100 years, broke the auction records but it's not just the aged whiskies that have been grabbing the attention. As, reportedly the ‘World’s Oldest Rum’ called so by Guinness World Record, got sold for nearly 30 grand. Aren’t you shocked?
As per a report published in vinepair.com, it is a 1780 vintage rum which reportedly was distilled in Barbados on the Harewood estate and was discovered in the cellar of the Harewood House in the UK by two wine trade professionals in 2011. The rum was auctioned originally by Christie’s for $9,500 in 2013 but recently, Miami spirits company Old Liquors Inc. has sold the bottle to an unnamed collector in Switzerland. Can you guess for how much?? Whooping $29,999! This rum holds a Guinness World Record for being the world’s oldest known rum.
As per a report, the dark rum, which is amber in color, weighed around 58 percent ABV. Christie’s tasting notes included intense flavors of spiced orange, cedar, and caramel. According to the Christie’s website, there were total 59 bottles of dark and light rum, but only 23 were suitable for sale because the quality of many had deteriorated so much. Prior to the original sale of the bottle, Christie’s believe that the rums are inherently linked to the Caribbean slave trade. In a press release, Old Liquors Inc head Bart Laming stated, ‘We are proud to be a part of the world of fine rum collecting’. He added ‘this sale is a testament to the enduring appeal of rare and exceptional spirits.
