Asian cuisine is known for its remarkable flavours and vibrant colours. Rice, garlic, ginger, sesame and soy sauce are some popular pantry ingredients in different cultures of the continent. While steaming and frying are some common methods of cooking. Rich curries made with variety of spices and coconut milk is the identity of Asian cuisine that is popular across the globe. But not only this, the street food of Asia is also packed with burst of aromas and flavours. Be it golgappe of India, Kimbap of South Korea or momos of Nepal, Asian street foods can be heaven for foodies. 

Street food is also one of the major sources of income for many people in different parts of Asia and this also keeps the city alive. One can find all kinds of flavours on the street and it's highly affordable. It is also a way to provide food to people in less money and if you are in a hurry as well as hungry, just ask the vendor for food and within no time, it will be in your hands. You can also eat it while walking or travelling. 

But if want to explore the flavour of Asian street food in your kitchen, here are three lip-smacking recipes brought you by Fox In The Field, Bangalore. Try them at home and enjoy: 

1. Yum Woon Sen 

Prep Time: 15 mins 

Cooking Time/ Assembly: 5 mins 

Servings: 3 people 

Ingredients: 

  • 50 gm glass noodles 
  • 10 gm broccoli  
  • 10 gm baby corn  
  • 2 gm celery  
  • 1 fresh red chilli  
  • 7 gm sugar  
  • 5 gm lemon grass  
  • 1 gm salt  
  • ½ gm aromatic powder  
  • 20 gm prawns     
  • 2 tsp lemon juice  
  • 3 tsp yum sauce  
  • 1 tsp siracha sauce  
  • 1 tsp fish sauce  
  • 1 tsp kokomen soya sauce  

Method: 

  • Boil the Glass noodles. Once boiled strain it and put it in cold water to cool. 
  • Cut the vegetables – baby corn, broccoli, White Fungus and carrot and keep them aside. Also, blanch the Shrimps. 
  • Take a medium sized bowl and add the glass noodles. 
  • To the bowl add fresh red chilli, finely chopped lemon grass, celery and chopped vegetables. 
  • To it, add the yum sauce, kokomen sauce, aromatic powder, fish sauce and siracha sauce 
  • Finally, garnish the salad with some microgreens.

2. Tofu Satay 

Prep Time: 35 mins 

Cooking Time/ Assembly: 10 mins 

Servings: 2 people 

Ingredients: 

  • 120 gm finger cut tofu 
  • 5 satay sticks 
  • 5 gm lemon grass  
  • 5 gm garlic chops 
  • 2 gm ginger  
  • 15 gm peanut 
  • 3 tsp chilli oil 
  • 5 gm curry powder 
  • 10 gm chilli paste 
  • 1 gm salt 
  • ½ gm aromatic powder 
  • 10 gm coriander roots  
  • 6 gm jaggery 

Method: 

  • Take Lemon grass, coriander roots, garlic, curry powder, chilli paste, fresh red chilli, jaggery, peanut, and chilli oil, and blanch them nicely. 
  • Then add some salt and aromatic powder to it. 
  • Add the finger cut tofu to it and mix them well. 
  • Arrange the tofu on the sticks. 
  • In a non-stick pan, brush some oil and grill the tofu on a slow flame for about 10 minutes. 
  • For garnish, arrange the tofu in a small dip bowl with some peanut butter sauce on its side. 

3. Kempong Ayam Gulai 


Prep Time: 30 mins 

Cooking Time/ Assembly: 10 mins 

Servings: 2 people 

Ingredients: 

  • 150 gm chicken with bone 
  • 10 onion salad  
  • 10 gm fresh red chilli 
  • 5 gm garlic  
  • 5 gm ginger  
  • 10 gm coriander stem and root 
  • 5 tsp curry powder  
  • 5 gm coriander powder  
  • 5 gm lemon grass 
  • 2 gm galangal  
  • 7 gm yellow chilli powder 
  • 40 gm coconut milk 
  • 1 potato

Method: 

  • Mix the chicken      with fresh turmeric powder and shallow fry them. 
  • To a blender add ginger, garlic, onion salad, coriander root, lemon grass, curry powder, turmeric powder, jeera, galangal, fresh red chilli, some chilli oil. 
  • Blend everything nicely till it forms a nice paste. 
  • Take a potato, peel and chop them into 4 pieces. 
  • Boil the potato first and then fry them lightly. 
  • In a vessel, add some refined oil and add the prepared paste to and mix it under low flame. 
  • To it add the Chicken and after 5 minutes, add the Coconut milk to it. Let it boil for 10 minutes. 
  • To it add the potato and cook it for another 5 minutes. 
  • Once it is ready, garnish the dish with fresh red chilli. Serve with steamed rice.
