It is often difficult for us to maintain the normal diet schedule outside home and office. Travelling does take a toll on us in terms of our health, where we are completely dependent on the outside food. Travel is for complete rejuvenation, and thus it is important for us to take care of our food equally so that the body does not undergo unnecessary stress on a relaxing trip. Even if we can’t completely substitute all the meals from outside, we can control and arrange for healthy alternatives. There are many food items such as a travel sandwich that is healthy and tasty, satiable and easy to make and carry.

A sandwich includes a couple of vegetables, a sauce, and some seasonings. While travelling by road, train, or flight, with everyone becoming conscious about the food that they eat, one prefers to pack or carry their food that can be curated to our tastes and health needs. Just as we prepare our sandwiches for small picnics or for a quick breakfast, carrying simple, required, non-perishable ingredients, can help make these sandwiches faster. Travel Sandwich (vegetarian)


  • 1 loaf bread
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 onion (optional)
  • 1 cucumber
  • Mayonnaise
  • Cheese (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper
  • Oregano


  • Cut the vegetables into slices to easily place inside the loaf.
  • Slice the loaf of bread in half.
  • Spread mayonnaise first using a knife or spoon.
  • Start adding the ingredients, one by one.
  • Place a layer of sliced tomato and finally a layer of cucumber (you may add a layer of onion too or layer two to three slices of cheese). 
  • Close and press the sandwich. 
  • Cut the sandwich into pieces that are convenient for eating such as a serrated bread.
  • The sandwich is ready to eat.
  • Cling wrapping these will stay nice and fresh for two more days.

Travel Sandwich (non-vegetarian)


  • 1 loaf French Bread
  • 400-500 gms deli meat
  • 4 slices deli cheese 
  • 4-6 lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato
  • ¼ cup pickled banana peppers
  • Mayonnaise, to taste
  • Mustard, to taste
  • Italian seasoning, to taste


  • Cut the vegetables into required sizes.
  • Take the bread loaf and cut it into half.
  • Place the ingredients one by one - a layer of meat followed by cheese.
  • Now, place the sliced tomato, banana peppers and finally lettuce for the crunch.
  • Add mayonnaise, mustard and salt and pepper or other Italian seasoning
  • Close and press the sandwich.
  • Cling wrap the sandwich to keep them fresh for one or more days.

A travel sandwich is very much helpful for road trips especially through cars and sometimes in trains too. Ingredients may or may not be carried as bread, mayonnaise packets, vegetables and seasonings are available on the way. Knives may be carried as per safety convenience options. These travel sandwiches can be easily and instantly prepared, without too much mess.
