Nirjala Ekadashi 2023: Healthy Drinks To Keep You Hydrated

The observance of Ekadashi holds immense significance in the Hindu culture and is revered and devoutly followed by a vast population across the globe. It occurs bi-monthly, precisely on the 11th day of the lunar cycle. On this day, people keep fast and refrain from ingesting grains and other specific food items. Nirjala Ekadashi, also referred to as Bhimseni Ekadashi, is a significant fasting ritual that honours Lord Vishnu. As the name suggests, Nirjala Ekadashi calls for devotees to refrain from consuming water.  

Devotees observe a strict fast on the day of Ekadashi, breaking it just after sunrise the following day. Fasting can be done with or without water, or with water and fruits, or with fruits only. Hindus believe that by abstaining from food and drink on Ekadashi, they will be protected from evil spirits, showered with good fortune, and given the mental clarity necessary to focus on God and achieve Moksha. 

We thought it would be nice to share with you some herbal drinks to enjoy before or after breaking your fast on Nirjala Ekadashi, which falls on May 31 this year. 

Mint tea 

During fasting, mint tea can keep you hydrated. Fasting can cause weariness and nausea, but this helps. This is one of the greatest fasting diet cooling drinks. 

Lemon water 

Another good fasting hydration option is lemon water. Lemons are natural detoxifiers. It's high in vitamin C, which boosts energy. 

Fruit juice 

Fruit juice provides hydration and nourishment, especially during fasting when you may be deficient in vitamins and minerals. Pick seasonal fruits with a little sugar and antioxidants. 

Coconut water 

Coconut water contains potassium, magnesium, and calcium. During fasting, it's a great hydrating drink. You may also make a coconut milk and almonds smoothie with your favourite nuts. Nuts like soaked almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and cashews provide energy, fibre, vitamins, minerals, and vital fatty acids. These two nutrients reduce dehydration and keep you satiated for long. 

Apple, beetroot and carrot juice 

Juices made from vegetables and fruits, like apple, beetroot and carrot, are excellent ways to replenish lost fluids and minerals.  

Herbal tea 

Herbal teas are the best way to prevent stomach problems and maintain proper hydration. Herbal teas are a great alternative to coffee, tea, and soda because they contain no caffeine. They help one feel refreshed physically and mentally. If you can't find any premade herbal tea, you can easily whip up your own in a blender. Ginger, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, black pepper, lemon juice, or any other flavourings you choose may be added as well. 

Buttermilk with mint 

Buttermilk contains calcium, protein, carbs, and beneficial bacteria that boost the immune system. Mint enhances and refreshes buttermilk. For flavour and nutrients, add roasted cumin seed powder, dry ginger, and asafoetida (hing). It lowers blood pressure and digests easily. 

Fruit Infused Water 

Fruit-infused water is a terrific drink. Vitamins and minerals are in it. It's refreshing and tasty! You can use any fruit, however we recommend seasonal low-sugar fruits. 

Cucumber Juice 

Staying hydrated with cucumber juice is another great idea for fasting. Water, potassium, and magnesium all contribute to its strong hydrating value.
