In Uttar Pradesh, more than 125 individuals reportedly fell ill after suspected food poisoning caused by the consumption of buckwheat flour. The affected individuals, experiencing symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea, have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment. As reported by PTI, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in Mathura has gathered 10 samples, including kuttu (buckwheat) and singhara (water chestnut) flour, from various markets for testing.
Upon receiving the reports, appropriate legal actions will be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006,” PTI quoted Assistant Commissioner (Food) Dharmendra Pratap Singh.
Buckwheat flour, known as ‘kuttu ka atta’, is widely used in traditional dishes like rotis and puris, particularly during Navratri fasting due to its gluten-free and nutritious qualities. However, this recent incident isn't the first of its kind, as similar cases of food poisoning tied to buckwheat flour occurred earlier this year. In August, over a hundred people, including women and children, were hospitalized in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, after consuming foods made from the flour, according to officials.
Authorities reported that a team from the District Food and Drug Administration conducted raids and shut down the shops of two vendors suspected of supplying the tainted buckwheat flour. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the vendors. The victims, who were fasting, experienced symptoms like vomiting, dizziness, and shivering after eating puris and pakodas made from contaminated flour.
Kuttu flour, also known as buckwheat flour, is a popular gluten-free flour in India, especially used during fasting periods like Navratri.
