Kitchen Tips: Here Are Two Ways To Make Condensed Milk At Home

When the nip in the air is felt prominently, we know it's time to indulge in desserts and beverages with plenty of milk in them. Be it a warm glass of milk at the end of the day with turmeric in it or a comforting bowl of Gajar Ka Halwa, it's time for milk to be extensively used in the kitchens. Oh, we don’t mean milk in its original form when we say this. Although varieties of forms of milk are used in different confections, there is one variety that is widely used in Indian desserts- condensed milk.

Condensed milk is just milk simmered and thickened with sugar until it becomes a thick reduction. Although condensed milk is available easily in cans, it is better to make it at home to save a lot of money and of course, adulterants. Hence, here are two ways through which you can make it at home.

1. Cooking Method-
- Remember to take the milk and the sugar in the correct ratio i.e. 5:1.
- It is always advisable to use a deep-bottomed pan to boil the milk.
- Remember to stir it continuously till the sugar dissolves.
- Reduce the flame to low and simmer the milk for about 30-45 minutes. Keep stirring the milk to avoid burning in the bottom.

2. No-Cook Method-
- Make sure you use boiling water to blend the ingredients.
- Add the ingredients in the correct measurements- one cup of boiling water, four cups of dry milk powder, two cups of sugar and one-fourth cup of margarine.
- Remember to scrape the sides of the blender to ensure that the dry ingredients are incorporated well.

If you are a vegan and want to make condensed milk at home, you can use coconut milk instead of regular cow milk. Do try making condensed milk at home with these two methods and let us know how it turns out.
