Tracing The History Of Greek Salad

Greek Salad also called Horiatiki Salad is a famous salad in Greek cuisine usually made with pieces of cucumbers, boiled potatoes, tomatoes, onion, feta cheese and olives and dressed with salt, Greek oregano and olive oil. Other ingredients which could be added are sliced capsicum, bell peppers or berries along with added seasonings such as chilli flakes and a dash of pepper powder. 

The Greek salad originated in Greece as a farmer's dish. It was something an impoverished farmer could whip up a meal with, straight from his garden. During the 1970s at the height of the tourist boom in Greece, the local restaurant owners started calling it Horiatiki (Greek) salad, to market it as a local and original rustic salad. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg partly boiled White Potatoes
  • 1/2 Cup Greek Yoghurt
  • 1/2 tbsp whole ground Mustard
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped Celery
  • 1/4 Cup Fresh Dill
  • 1/4 Cup Chives
  • 2 Boiled Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped Bacon

Method:

  • Cut the boiled potatoes into cubes and keep it aside 
  • Take a big mixing bowl and add yoghurt to it
  • To the yoghurt, add mustard, salt, onion powder and pepper for seasoning; mix it all well.
  • Now add the celery, dill, chives, the boiled eggs and mix it again; mix till all the dressing and seasonings get well along.
  • Now add the cube cut potatoes and mix properly (make sure the dressings gets mixed. all over the potatoes and move hands gently so that the potatoes does not get break)
  • Finally add chopped bacons, this adds to the taste and doubles the taste.
