A Glimpse At Coconut's History And Nutritive Value

One cannot but feel awed at the innumerable benefits of coconuts, which are grown in abundance in God’s own land, Kerala. Today coconut cultivation has been propagated widely in India. However, the first-ever origin of coconut can be traced to the Indo-Malay region comprising Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Australia, New Guinea and several Pacific Island groups. One can go on talking about the nutritional value of coconut, right from its kernel and pulp to unsweetened coconut water. The humble palm fruit is full of fats, fibre, and Vitamin B. If we talk about coconut meat, it is rich in manganese and copper, high in fat and low in carbs. On the other hand, coconut water is loaded with minerals, and antioxidants, maintains electrolyte balance, keeps the body hydrated and is good for skin, hair and overall health.

As far as coconut ice creams are concerned, their origin is not so authentically established. However a lesser-known legend tells that these were made first in Thailand in the 19th century during the regime of King Rama V. Whether that is true or not, Coconut Ice cream is surely an extremely popular dessert in Thailand, prepared with a variety of toppings including shredded coconut, and roasted peanuts and herbal jelly. In India, these are relished throughout the cafes and restaurants of South India, coastal cities and even other places.
