Besan Chilla: High Protein Breakfast To Start Your Day With

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The day must start with a fulfilling meal which keeps you full for the rest half of the day. This meal gives you the energy to kickstart your day and so one needs to have a meal which is low in calories but high in protein and nutrients. 

Chillas are one of the easiest and convenient recipes to make. It could be made of healthy ingredients like gram flour (besan). semolina (rawa), oats, wheat flour, moong dal paste and a few others as the base or the main ingredient. Here, the recipe of Besan Chilla is shared which is super healthy and tasty. 

This recipe of Besan Chilla proves beneficial to many health issues and diseases like Thyroid, PCOS and diabetes. It has high fibre and protein which keeps one feeling fuller for a long time and thus helps in weight loss. It is gluten free. 

Health Benefits of Besan

Gram Flour or Chickpea Flour also called besan has high nutrients and many properties which are good for health. It is rich in vitamins and minerals like Thiamine, Phosphorus, Folate, Iron, Magnesium, Copper and Manganese. Chickpea Flour has half of the carbs than regular flour and hence it helps maintain the blood sugar level. Chickpeas contain antioxidants and may help fight free radicals. Using chickpea flour in processed foods seems to reduce their content of harmful acrylamide.

Ingredients: 

  • 1 roughly chopped Tomato
  • 4-5 shallots of Onion
  • 1/2 chopped Carrot
  • 1/2 Cup Besan
  • 1/4 tsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/3 tsp crushed Ajwain 
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida
  • 1 Green Chilli (finely chopped)
  • Chopped Fresh Coriander
  • Pink Himalayan Salt as per taste
  • Water as per required consistency
  • Oil for greasing the chillas

Method:

  • Put all the onions, tomato and chopped carrot in a mixer grinder and grind it all into a rough paste
  • Take a mixing bowl and put besan in it.
  • To the besan, add all the spices (red chilli powder, turmeric, pepper, ajwain, cumin seeds, asafoetida) along with green chillies and coriander
  • Now add the onion and tomato paste along with pink salt
  • Mix it well
  • Now gradually keep adding water to convert the batter into a thick consistency
  • Now grease a pan with oil and drop a ladle of batter, spread it evenly throughout the pan
  • Let it cook for a minute and flip it to the other side,  grease the other side with oil and let it cook for an another minute
  • Take it out of the pan, the chillas are ready to be served

These hot thin besan chillas could be served either with mint and coriander chutney or tomato chutney or ketchup. The taste is amazingly delicious and has the perfect health benefits.
