Ghugni Chaat has a semi-liquid consistency and is often served as a snack. It is often served with a variety of toppings, such as chopped onions, cilantro, and tamarind chutney. Some people also add a dollop of yogurt or sprinkle sev or bhujia on top for added texture. Ghugni chaat is usually served in a bowl or on a plate and can be eaten with a spoon or scooped up with a flatbread such as a roti or a puri. It is a flavorful and filling snack that is perfect for a quick bite on the go or as an appetizer before a meal. The following are some of the best places in Kolkata for ghugni chaat.

1. Chat Chowpatty

We went to this place on a friend’s suggestion. Located a mere five minutes from the Maidan metro station by foot, this vegetarian chat eatery has a decent variety of fast food. We tried Dahi Wada and Papri Chat. The Dahi Wada with the right spice mixture simply melted once in our mouths. The Papri Chat was crisp, with sweet and spicy flavors throughout.

Specially the ghugniwallas at Vardaan market’s entrance are well known for their ghugni chaat. We happened to go to the market for some clothes shopping and happened upon a ghugniwalla at the entrance and decided to give the ghugni chaat he was selling a shot. Hot, tasty, and filling is how we would describe our experience. Will return just to try more Ghugni Chaat.

He sells close to a thousand plates of Ghugni Chaat a day, and on this day, we were responsible for wolfing down some of them. The chopped onions, green chilies, tamarind water, and secret spice mix seemed to do the magic, and we were hooked. Another place worth returning to in the future.

7. Kolkata Ghugni

This little-known Ghugni eatery is in the Gariahat area of Kolkata. We happened upon this place as we were passing through the area. This is another one of those places that serves only ghugni chaat and nothing else. The Ghugni here is advertised as being quite devoid of oil, and that’s evident as you plough your way through a given plate. Delicious and filling, we are sure we’ll remember this place as we endeavor to return to it.

8. Chowrasia Chat Centre

A bustling food joint in the middle of Kolkata city, this place has a decently sized menu and isn't one-dimensional like many other similar eateries. No complaints here from the quantity or taste perspective.

We had the Ghugni Phuchka with a spicy and tangy filling of tomatoes, onions, and chutneys. At a mere Rs. 50, we devoured at least four plates of this dish before calling it quits as we were full. The places mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg that is Ghugni/Ghugni Chaat in Kolkata. There are numerous Ghugni vendors all over the city who show up to a location once or twice a day and remain anonymous as they do not have a stall or a shop. For those in Kolkata and beyond with a culinary inclination towards street food in the said city, exploring the Ghugni trail in the city is a worthwhile endeavor, we reckon.
