With the rich diversity of cultures and customs in India, there is no dearth in variety in terms of languages, rituals, religions, attires and food. A small community from present-day Iran that settled in India to flee from the Arab Muslims, Parsis are have carved a niche for themselves in the country. We find Parsis across sectors, right from Hindi cinema actors like Boman Irani to culinary maestros like Chef Anahita Dhondy with a Parsi origin. Their culture is quite distinct from the other religions in the country and they are basically believers of Zoroastrianism. Apart from their unique language and customs, if there’s anything else that captures the limelight, it is the Parsi cuisine.

The rustic fare is a combination of a mélange of flavours that are brought together on the table in a delicious way. If you dig deeper into the Parsi fare, you’ll notice that they have a strong penchant for potatoes, eggs and meat. Be it a simply vegetable dish or a curry, meat is often paired with it to give it a luscious taste. Irani chai is also quite popular in their cuisine as are desserts like lagan nu custard. While the Parsi culture is quite prominent in Mumbai, where you will find scores of Parsi cafes serving the most authentic food.
