The arrival of winters brings with itself several festivities, gatherings, celebrations. It is the harbinger of good times, of barbeques, of warm soups, drinks and cocktails. It is the season to cope with the cold with chai and coffee, to wrap ourselves in blankets, to drown ourselves in hoodies. But along with all these, it is also the season of common cold, flu, fever and several other immunity related diseases. So, how do we tackle that? The answer is right there in our kitchens and our ancient ayurveda. Yes, we can have kadha to warm ourselves up during winters and to protect us against several diseases. Here are 3 different kadha recipes to arm yourself up against the harsh winters this year.

Neem Kadha 

Ingredients

  • 5-6 neem leaves 
  • 3-4 cloves 
  • 1 tbsp jaggery powder 
  • 3 cups water 

Method 

  • In a pan, bring the water to a boil.
  • Tear the neem leaves and add it to the water.
  • Let it boil for 2 more minutes.
  • Then, add the cloves.
  • Remove from heat after a minute.
  • Finally, add the jaggery powder. 
  • Strain the kadha and store it. 

Turmeric-Pepper Kadha

Ingredients

  • Raw turmeric 
  • Black pepper 
  • 1 tbsp honey 
  • Ginger 
  • Cloves 
  • 3 cups water 

Method 

  • In a pan, boil the water. 
  • With a mortar and pestle, grind the turmeric and pepper. 
  • Add the turmeric and pepper to water. 
  • Chop the ginger and add it to the water. 
  • Boil together for 5-6 minutes. 
  • Add honey to the kadha. 
  • Strain and store the kadha. 

Ginger and clove kadha 

  • 20 gms Ginger 
  • 5-6 Cloves 
  • Black pepper 
  • Cinnamon stick 
  • 8-10 basil leaves 
  • 3 cups water 

Method 

  • In boiling water, add ginger and let it simmer for 2 minutes. 
  • With a mortar and pestle, grind the rest of the ingredients except basil leaves. 
  • Add these to the water and then boil it for 2 more minutes. 
  • Now tear the basil leaves and again boil for 5 minutes. 
  • Strain the kadha and store it in a glass container.
