Just when you thought you had seen the worst of what this year had to offer in terms of food experiments, in comes something like ‘Roohafza Maggi’ and shakes the earth beneath our feet. We agree, Maggi or instant noodles are a favourite when it comes to experimenting. Haven’t we all felt like pro chefs, each time we tried adding more green chillies, veggies, meat etc, to the standard recipe? But how much is too much? This is the question we were left pondering upon many times this year. Much like the ‘Fanta Maggi’ that went viral earlier this year, this peculiar Maggi experiment has also not gone down too well among Maggi lovers across India or even the creators who made the reel in the first place.

But before Fanta Maggi ruined the instant noodles for us, remember how we felt rather queasy about ‘Chocolate Maggie’? But at least in chocolate Maggi, boiled noodles were tossed with chocolate sauce for a ‘dessert-like’ experience. Roohafza Maggi is made with the Masala or the spice-mix that comes with the packet, because it appears much like the yellow, 'savoury' Maggi we are used to seeing. However, towards the end, the vendor also splashes a bit of Roohafza to the Kadhai, and you cannot help but gasp in utter horror. The liquidy Maggi is served with a garnish of coriander leaves. The reel was posted by food blogger Arjun Chauhan (@oye.foodieee) on Instagram, and it has already raked in more than 4.2 million views in a week since it was uploaded. Arjun also refused to share the location where this bizarre street food was being sold “Hum ni bta rahe (we don’t want to disclose)” he wrote in his caption.

“Maggi ki rooh nikal gyi”, wrote a user in the comments section, “oh my eyes oh my eyes”, exclaimed another.  “Hey bhagwan pehle fanta ab roohafza..Maggi ko baksh do yaar”, read one of the shrewd observations.

Roohafza, for the uninitiated, is a rose-flavored syrup, used to make sweet sherbets in summer. It is also added to milk and Falooda for an aromatic kick and the lovely red hue. Why did anyone think of adding the syrup to Maggi? Guess, you have to try to know. The ruby-red Maggi does make for a vision, but is it necessary? Well, your guess is as good as ours.

Rooh Afza Maggi joins the league of cringe-worthy food combos like Roshogolla Biryani and Ferrero Rocher Manchurian, what else do you have in store for us 2021? We are waiting.
