With the onset of the summer, people quickly shift their food items to the fridge. However, it causes a risk of spoilage due to the refrigerator's chock-full and starts smelling bad. So, first, you need to understand where and how to keep things in the fridge. Many people do not know how to store food items in the refrigerator, resulting in spoilage. Here are some suggestions to prevent that and help organise your items in the fridge.

  1. What to place on the door and last shelf: Keep vegetables and fruits on the last shelf of the fridge. As they require neither low nor high temperature, they can be kept at the bottom. Only select things should be stored on the door shelf - items like sauce, vinegar and peanut butter. Avoid keeping perishable items on the door shelf.
  2. What can go on the top shelf: Leftover food like vegetables, rice, juice, and dough should be stored on the freezer's top shelf or bottom shelf. The refrigerator's temperature on this shelf is always constant, due to which the food can be kept safe. Whenever you store food at night, always keep it on the top shelf.
  3. What to store on the middle shelf: The middle shelf is best for storing dairy products like milk, cheese, butter, and eggs. Unfortunately, many people keep food and milk together on the middle shelf. Also, avoid storing only food on the middle shelf.
  4. What to put on the bottom shelf: You can store things like raw meat or fish on the bottom shelf, as it remains colder.

A few important things to keep in mind

  1. The fridge must be cleaned once every three months. Take out all the shelves at once and wash them with soapy water.
  2. To clean the refrigerator wall, mix one teaspoon of vinegar in 1 litre of water. Now, dip the cloth in this mixture and clean it by squeezing it. Doing this will kill the bacteria present inside the fridge.
  3. Keep baking soda open in a box and keep it on the second or third shelf to keep your fridge fresh. Mention the date on it and change it every second or third month.
  4. Do not store fruits and vegetables together, as some fruits release gases causing vegetables to spoil quickly. Apart from this, do not store fruits and vegetables with meat.
