Growing up in Delhi, can you share your all-time favourite breakfast spots?
For me, breakfast has always been about comfort and familiarity. Growing up, I loved the old-school South Indian restaurants in Delhi, like Sagar Ratna, which were my family’s go-to for idli, dosa, and filter coffee. More recently, I’ve also enjoyed Bhawan in Gurgaon. They do a fantastic take on classic Indian breakfast dishes with a modern twist.
What are your go-to cafes or tea spots in Delhi?
I’m not a tea person at all, but for coffee, I love places that make it an experience. Fig at Malcha is always a favourite, Cafe Dori is great for its airy vibe and strong brews, and Perch has this perfect mix of good coffee and a cosy atmosphere.
In reference to your recipe books, can you recommend some dessert corners in Delhi NCR?
Delhi has some incredible dessert spots. Big Chill Cakery is an absolute classic for me, their cheesecakes and banoffee pie are unmatched. I also love Harajuku Pancakes for their fluffy Japanese-style pancakes, The Grammar Room for indulgent desserts in a cosy setting, and Olive Qutub, which always has a stellar dessert menu to end a beautiful meal. And of course, if you’re looking to bake at home, my latest e-book Better Baking with Shivesh is full of easy, indulgent dessert recipes you can recreate in your own kitchen.
What are some of your favourite mithai and ice cream places in the city?
When it comes to mithai, Bikanervala, Bansal’s and Haldiram’s are nostalgic favourites. For ice cream, I really enjoy Naturals for their seasonal fruit flavours and GiGi for something more artisanal; otherwise, nothing beats good homemade ice creams.
Do you have any favourite street food joints in Delhi?
For street food, Bikanervala and Haldiram’s are my picks. They've been part of every Delhi kid’s growing-up years, and their chaats and snacks are still unbeatable when those cravings hit.
Which is your favourite modern diner or contemporary cafe?
I enjoy spending time at Olive Qutub. It's a classic, but always feels fresh. Colocal is another favourite for its chocolate-focused menu and cosy vibe. I also like Perch for good food paired with coffee and wine, and Bhawan in Gurgaon for its contemporary spin on Indian comfort food.
Anything else you love about the culinary scene in Delhi?
What I love most is the variety. And you’ll find everything in Delhi, from authentic regional Indian food to world cuisines done really well. It’s the mix of tradition and innovation that keeps the city’s food scene so exciting.
