A strong cup of coffee is what you need to energise for the week ahead. Whether it’s starting your day with this beverage or ending your day, with a coffee flavoured treat- this drink has certainly found its way in to the hearts and plates of many. The latest coffee aficionado to express her love for the drink is actress Neha Dhupia. Sharing a photo of her coffee, Neha wrote, “Kaafi zaroorat thi kaafi ki.” Neha often posts about her love for this beverage on her Instagram stories.

Did you know that coffee dates back to 800 A.D? While this old beverage dominates the global market, it’ll interest you to know that India alone produces more than three lakh tonnes of coffee every year, and Karnataka contributes to 85 per cent of this. When serving a beverage it is important that you pair it with an appropriate bite to go the full circle on showing hospitality to your guests. While you could serve tea with multiple bites, there are a few recommendations that come in to play when you pair your coffee with treats. Here are a few food pairings that go well with coffee:

Croissant

This crispy puff pastry makes for the perfect snack to enjoy with a hot cup of coffee. As Indian consumers mostly tend to enjoy a sweetish tinge to their beverage, the plain croissant compliments the taste palate by neutralising the taste buds. Butter croissant is a popular flavour that’s usually paired with coffee. Croissant can also be enjoyed along with a hot cup of coffee with a number of other toppings. Coffee cake

Apart from the fact that coffee cakes have the name coffee in them, this treat genuinely goes well with the drink. The coffee cake has a buttery flavour with hints of cinnamon and sugar. The woody and slightly citrusy taste of cinnamon, and the sweet taste of sugar, balance the bitter taste of coffee. The best coffee to pair a coffee cake with, is a medium roast coffee. This combination helps to bring out the natural sweetness of the cinnamon, which is the predominant flavour of coffee cake.

Donuts

Different types of donuts pair well with different varieties of coffee. Coffee and donuts are a timeless pairing. While lighter coffee roasts make an ideal match for tangy and savoury gourmet donut flavours, medium roast coffee pair well with sweet varieties of donuts. Interestingly, as shown in popular American sitcoms, this popular pairing, often consumed by cops, has a real life back story to it. Reportedly, late-night and early morning donut shops became more popular in the US after the Second World War. The shops would often be the only businesses open in the town late at night. Owing to their late night shifts, police officers would frequently visit donut shops to eat donuts along with a cup of coffee. This would help them stay awake. Many coffee-and-donut lovers swear by the sweet Costa Rican coffee as a safe brew to be paired with any variety of donut.
