The popularity of smoothies is increasing day by day. Not just the people who work out in gyms, but other people also rush after smoothies and protein shakes to get the right amount of nutrition for their body. But all those health freaks, ever heard of Aval milk? Made up of flattened rice and nuts, this beverage hails from Kerala and is packed with several health benefits. It also has the goodness of plantains and is best served chilled on a hot summer day. 

Originating from Malappuram district in Kerala, the drink is undoubtedly pan-India favourite. If you have visited Kerala even once, you must have witnessed this drink being sold in roadside shacks and small teashops on the streets of Kerala. And you know what? This drink is not extremely delicious, but power packed with so many benefits that you can’t even think about. Besides, it is very refreshing and can compete with any summer beverage.

It is generally thicker than the regular smoothie but is lighter and heathier. Thanks to its ingredients like flattened rice, nuts and bananas, this drink is high in vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, A along with minerals like copper and zinc. This drink is also considered beneficial in lowering cholesterol levels in the body as well as improving gut health. This beverage is power packed with health benefits and could be an ideal drink for breakfast. Wanna know how to make it at home? Here you go! 

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup flattened rice or aval  
  • ½ cup peanuts (roasted) 
  • ½ cup cashews (roasted) 
  • 6 bananas 
  • 2 cups cold milk 
  • 8 to 9 raisins 
  • 2 tbsp sugar 
  • Nuts to garnish 

Method 

  • Heat a pan and roast some aval or poha. Then, roast the peanuts as well as cashew. Crush the nuts lightly.  
  • Take a bowl and add mashed bananas to it. Also, add sugar and mix it well. 
  • Now, add roasted aval and nuts to the bowl. Then, add cold milk and mix well. Mix until you get the desired consistency. 
  • When done, pour the drink into a glass and garnish with raisins, cashews etc.
