Winter Special: 5 Turmeric-Based Cocktails To Try This Season

Turmeric is a bright and warm spice that is staple in Indian kitchens. Used for all stir fries, curries and other savoury dishes, it is also known as ‘the golden spice’. This yellow-orange ingredient has been utilised for centuries in traditional cooking as well as medicine practices. Turmeric has a warm and slightly bitter flavour that makes it a great addition to beverages like smoothies, teas and milk. But have you ever tried adding it to your cocktails?  

If not, then here are five interesting cocktails you can make with the golden spice-turmeric: 

Lunar Eclipse 

Ingredients 

  • 2 ounces turmeric-infused vodka 
  • 1 ounce carrot juice 
  • 3/4-ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed 
  • 3/4-ounce honey 
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters 
  • Garnish: celery stick

Method 

  • Add vodka, carrot juice, lemon juice, honey and bitter into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. 
  • Shake well until chilled. 
  • Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a celery stick and enjoy. 

Lazy Sunday 

Ingredients 

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila 
  • 1 1/2 ounces grapefruit juice 
  • 1-ounce cinnamon syrup 
  • 1/4-ounce turmeric tea 
  • Club soda water, to top 
  • Garnish: grapefruit twist 

Method 

  • Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well until chilled. 
  • Strain into a cocktail glass over fresh ice. Top it with soda water. 
  • Garnish with a grapefruit twist. Serve. 

Cry Baby 

Ingredients 

  • 1 ounce whiskey 
  • 1/2-ounce bourbon 
  • 1/2-ounce Lem Orton Pommeau de Normandie Calvados 
  • 1/4-ounce DOM Benedictine 
  • 1/2-ounce cane syrup 
  • 1 dash Cecil & Merl turmeric bitters 
  • Garnish: lemon twist

Method 

  • Add all ingredients into a mixing glass. Fill with ice and stir gently until well-chilled. 
  • Strain into a cocktail glass over an ice cube. 
  • Garnish with a lemon twist and enjoy. 

Turmeric Gin Cocktail 

Ingredients 

  • 4 ounces gin 
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric 
  • Juice of ½ a lime 
  • 6-8 ounces ginger beer 
  • Lime wheels for garnish 

Method 

  • Add gin, turmeric and lime juice to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled. 
  • Strain the mixture evenly among two cocktail glasses filled 2/3 of the way with ice. 
  • Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wheel. Enjoy. 

Turmeric Sour 

Ingredients 

  • 2 oz. turmeric-infused vodka 
  • 3/4 oz. honey syrup  
  • 1 oz. fresh lemon juice 
  • 1/2 oz. fresh egg white  
  • 1 dash aromatic bitters

Method 

  • Add all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake well with ice until chilled.  
  • Strain and discard the ice. Then return the cocktail again to the shaker and dry shake.  
  • Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and top with cinnamon. Enjoy.
