AGMARK, short for Agricultural Mark, is a certification granted by the Government of India to guarantee the quality of agricultural products. Established in 1937 under the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, AGMARK certification facilitates the grading and marketing of agricultural goods. This certification applies to a variety of products, including food grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and processed foods, ensuring they meet strict quality and safety standards.

To consumers, AGMARK certification is vital because it ensures that the food products they consume adhere to specific hygiene, purity, and quality parameters, with contaminants and toxins removed. For producers, AGMARK offers a competitive edge by increasing their products' marketability in a crowded marketplace.

What Is AGMARK Certification?

AGMARK certification verifies the quality and grading of agricultural products under the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act of 1937. The Directorate of Marketing & Inspection (DMI), under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, sets the standards for AGMARK certification. As of now, 222 agricultural commodities have AGMARK standards, including wheat, atta (flour), besan (gram flour), fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, oils, ghee, spices, and honey.

These standards are updated regularly in consultation with international standards from bodies like the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and Codex Alimentarius Commission, as well as domestic regulations like the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. The grading process categorises commodities into various quality levels, ensuring uniformity and clarity in the marketplace.

Requirements And Procedure For AGMARK Certification

Although AGMARK certification is primarily voluntary, some products like blended edible vegetable oils and fat spreads require mandatory certification under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sale) Regulations of 2011.

To obtain AGMARK certification, producers apply through the Directorate of Marketing & Inspection (DMI). The certification process is handled by a network of Central and Regional Agmark Laboratories across India. These laboratories, many accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), test the products to ensure they meet AGMARK standards.
