Watch: Ever Tried A Murukku Sandwich? It Is Crunch Overload

Tea-time in India is no mean affair, countless refills of chai must be complemented by crispy, crunchy snacks. These snacks also vary from region to region, if North is hooked on to their samosas and pakodas, for Gujarat, a plate of soft dhoklas, khakras, and jalebi spell magic. In South India too, there’s a range of snacks one can pick and choose from. Vadas, banana chips, ribbon pakoda, the list is endless. One such tea-time classic is the Murukku. Murukku is a spiral-shaped, deep-fried snack and since each coil is so textured, the whole snack turns out to be ultra-crispy. Murukku is made using Murukku machines. These are small, hand-operated machines with a perforated opening, you load the machine with fresh batter, and then by applying pressure, the batter falls into the oil, making gorgeous-looking spirals. While these machines are easily available in the market, but do you know what is even more easily available? Ready-made murukkus. So just grab a packet and start making this delicious recipe.  

A snack similar to Murukku is also very famous in Maharashtra, where it is called Chakli. Now whether you call it Chakli or Murukku, it remains one of the crispiest snacks we know of, and it is this crispness that make the sandwich oh-so-irresistible. In this recipe by Slurrp community member and homechef Chirag, murukku is stacked with slices of onions, potatoes, cucumber and slathered over with chutney and finished off with the sprinkling of sev.  It is an incredibly easy recipe that you can put in under 5 minutes and serve to guests who are joining you for tea, or munch on yourself, each time the cravings hit.

Here’s a step-by-step instruction of what you need to do:

Ingredients:

  • Murukku
  • Cucumber
  • Tomato
  • Boiled potato
  • Onion
  • Sev
  • Green chutney (To make this chutney: blend coriander, roasted peanuts, green chilli, garlic, cumin seeds, jaggery powder, chaat masala, black salt together)
  • Fresh coriander

Method:

  1. Place the Murukku on plate.
  2. Spread over some chutney on each murukku
  3. Place a slice of cucumber and tomato.
  4. Follow it up with a slice of onions and boiled potatoes
  5. Sprinkle some chaat masala
  6. Then finally add another dash of chutney.
  7. Cover it with another Murukku
  8. Finish it off with a sprinkle of sev and chopped coriander.
