Which place comes to your mind when you think of scenic backwaters, lush hill stations, and mesmerizing views? Yes, we are talking about God’s Own Country i.e., Kerala. Apart from its amazing beauty, Kerala offers some lip-smacking and delicious food as well. If you know, you know!!

From prawn curries to fish curries, we know we can have some of the amazing seafood in Kerala. But what about vegetarian food? If you think that the only vegetarian food you can find in Kerala is Idli and Sambar, you are perfectly wrong. Just to bust your myth, here are some popular vegetarian dishes from the state. Especially on a day like Kerala Piravi, it is essential that we talk about some delicious food of the state to have a heavenly experience. Are you ready?

Erissery

One of the famous dishes in Kerala, Erissery is a delicious pumpkin preparation flavoured with mild spices. Typically made with slightly sweet pumpkins with salt, chilies or pepper, dried lentils, grated coconut, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, and garlic, this dish is served with piping hot rice.

Kadala Curry

This spicy vegetarian curry has black chickpeas, coconut, and flavourful seasoning and is yet another famous dish in Kerala. Traditionally served with appam for breakfast, this curry is vegan, gluten-free, and delicious.

Malabari Parotta

This flaky and flavourful bread from Kerala is loved for its amazing taste and texture. This parotta goes best with delectable stew and coconut curries. When served with a spoonful of ghee, this parotta can take you to foodie heaven. 

Appam with vegetable stew

Appam is an iconic, crispy and wafer-thin pancake made up of coconut milk and rice flour. Often enjoyed with vegetarian stew or ishtu graced with lots of fresh coconut milk, spices, onions, french beans, and other veggies. Some may have the non-vegetarian variant of this stew, but the veggie stew is divine in itself.

Cheeran Toran 

This South Indian side dish made up of red or green spinach is known as Cheeran Toran or spinach bhaji. This dish looks so simply but can give a treat to your taste buds. But can you guess what makes this dish even more special? It is the use of grated coconut and coconut oil. 

Ghee Rice

South Indian food is incomplete without rice and ghee rice is one Kerala rice dish that has been ruling our heart for ages. Known as Neyichoru in Malayalam, this is a cooked rice dish that has an earthy and distinct flavour of ghee. It is a staple in Kerala and is served with kurma or a South Indian curry.
