Tribal food is mostly inspired by various available resources, which are carefully gathered by the tribal communities living in the forest. Hunting and collecting were major activities in the Tribes of Jharkhand. Having odd ingredients together was almost common every single day.
Over time, these patterns have taken a new path and are identified as innovative recipes, which are now part of authentic tribal food. Different dishes with vegetarian items are combined to make new flavours and textures one has never tried before.
If you wish to know more about tribal cooking and its traditional recipes, here are some unique dishes of tribes in Jharkhand for you to try.
Meat Dishes To Try From Tribal Communities
Mutton Chana
It is famous in Jharkhand and its neighbouring states. The dish is made of chickpeas (chana) and mutton (goat meat). The Santhal and Munda tribes are known to cook it for festivals and special occasions. It has local spices, and slow cooking gives the chana mutton strong flavours. Traditionally, it is served with rice, roti, or naan.
Sal Patta Chicken
Sal trees (Shorea robusta) are widely found in Jharkhand; Sal Patta Chicken is a distinctive delicacy. The Oraon and Munda tribes use this method for cooking. The chicken is then slowly roasted in a traditional clay oven or over an open flame. The chicken absorbs the smokey and earthy. Sal Patta Chicken goes well with bread or rice.
Magur Soya Badi Sabji
This traditional preparation, which consists of soy chunks and Magur fish (catfish), comes from the tribal areas of Jharkhand. The Santhal and Ho tribes have access to freshwater sources for fishing. After cleaning and chopping the fish, it is cooked with various vegetables and soy chunks (soya badi). Rice absorbs the flavour of the curry when Magur Soya Badi Sabji is served.
Jadoh
Jadoh is a combination of rice and spices cooked with pork. The ingredients include onions, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and black pepper. Pig blood is added to some variations to increase the dish's flavour and richness. Fried pork chunks are also added as a side.
Bamboo Shoot Pork
The Munda and Oraon tribes in Jharkhand, as well as the Nagas and other northeastern tribes, are majorly familiar with this dish. Fresh bamboo shoots are sliced and cooked alongside pork after being collected and cleaned. The dish is frequently cooked slowly to ensure that the bamboo shoots absorb the flavours of the pork and spices.
