Try These Halwa Recipes For The Winter

Winter is a lovely time. It begins as the year is about to end and everyone is busy enjoying this time of the year. The markets are full of fresh vegetables and fruits. There are a lot of specific dishes that are made during this season and halwa is definitely one such dish. We actually associate the winters with the time when we finally get to have some deliciously hot gajar ka halwa and lip-smacking moong dal ka halwa.

But is that all? India has so many different varieties of halwas that you will be surprised to know how many you are missing out on. From onion to meat to potatoes, you name it and some or the other place has that variation of halwa as a part of their local cuisine. So, it goes without saying that with so many different varieties of vegetables and fruits, we have some halwas that you can try this winter and enjoy.

Kaali gajar ka halwa

Black carrots or kaali gajar are only available for a very short time period during the early winters and you need to make use of this window very soon to prepare this amazing halwa. While carrots are mostly sweet, this variety has a subtle peppery taste that actually adds to the flavour of the dish. Let us look at a simple recipe.


  • ½ kg black carrot
  • 2 cup sugar
  • Ghee
  • 100 gm mawa
  • 2 cups milk
  • 10-12 roasted almonds
  • 2 tsp cardamom powder 


  • Grate the black carrots finely.
  • In a kadhai, heat up the ghee.
  • Add the grated carrots and cook it for 10 minutes.
  • When the ghee starts to separate a little, add the milk.
  • Cover and cook on medium flame for 20-25 minutes till the carrot is completely cooked.
  • Add the sugar and keep stirring the halwa for 5 minutes.
  • Add cardamom powder and the mawa.
  • Adjust consistency according to your preference.
  • Switch off the gas and garnish with roasted almonds.
  • Enjoy the halwa hot.

Green gram halwa

Again, green halwa is only available for a brief period during the winters. So, this is a delicacy that you can enjoy during the early months of winter and now is the perfect time to do just that. Here is a quick recipe that you can follow.
