It is a lazy day. Or maybe it is just the weather. You are craving something spicy and filling. But the nearest restaurant seems too far away. Pizza seems too boring. What should you do? Well, we have just the thing for you. Spicy Tuna Crispy Nigiri is the kind of sushi that would satiate all your hunger. And what’s better? It is really easy to cook.

Unlike normal sushi, it is tangier and spicier. The texture is creamy due to the presence of mayo. The tangy flavour is given by jalapeno peppers.

Before we dip into the recipe of the dish, let us read about where the dish came from. Because with history, food tastes better.

Where Did Spicy Tuna Nigiri Come From?

This might come as a big surprise to many of our readers, but spicy tuna roll traces its origin to the USA and not Japan. It was invented in Los Angeles in the 1980s by a Japanese chef, Jean Nakayama. He worked at Menaki restaurant in LA. The tuna scraps were mixed with chilly sauce and layered with sheets of nori and rice. However, the dish became extremely popular when it was served separately with rice.

Now that we have discussed the history of the dish, we know your mouth must be feeling ticklish, isn’t it? Don’t worry, we will not take more time and dive directly into the recipe.

Let’s jump into the recipe

The recipe has two components, Sushi Rice and Spicy Tuna. We will look at them one by one.

Ingredients:

Sushi Rice

1 cup sushi rice or short grain rice

1 ½ cup water

5 tbsp rice vinegar

3 tbsp sugar

1 tsp kosher salt

frying oil

2 cups water

Spicy Tuna

1 lb sushi-grade red tuna

¼ cup mayo

4 tbsp sriracha sauce

3 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

juice of 1 lemon

2 tbsp sliced green onion

sliced jalapeno peppers to taste

Method:

Sushi Rice

Take one cup of rice and wash it in cold water. Wash until the rice becomes clean. Now, along with water, soak the rice in a pot and boil it over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. After it is done, boil them on low heat for 10 more minutes.

Turn off the gas and let the rice stay as they are for a while. Do not remove the lid.

Now, remove the lid and fluff the rice using a fork. Then season them with rice vinegar, sugar and kosher salt. You are almost there. Let the rice rest for another 5 minutes.

When all this is done and the rice have cooled down to room temperature, take a spoon and shape the rice in the shape of nigiri or sushi. Fry the rice balls until they turn golden brown.

Now take a plate or a towel and drain the fried rice balls on it. One part of our dish has is cooked.

Spicy Tuna

Take the tuna and dice it into bite-size pieces.

Take a bowl and mix the fish along with mayo, sriracha sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, sliced green onions and jalapeno peppers.

Now that both the parts of our dish are made, let’s integrate them to reach a well-balanced-for-taste-buds flavour.

Put the spicy tuna atop fried rice balls. If you want, you can add more jalapeno peppers or green onions to the dish.

Your dish is ready to nibble!

It does not matter if you eat it alone or with a loved one, the taste will surely make you drool.
