Sbiten is a traditional hot winter beverage from Russia. It has a dark purplish appearance with flavours either too sweet or spicy. A glass of sbiten is put together by infusing boiled water with honey, jam, and spices. It is garnished with fresh mint leaves and cinnamon sticks to bring out extra flavours. Some recipes also call out for a splash of red wine in place of water. The drink has been a winter partner for Russians since the beginning of the 16th century. Sbiten remained immensely popular among all classes of Russian society until the 19th century. It, unfortunately, lost its popularity with the arrival of tea and coffee. Nevertheless, this old-fashioned hot beverage is still savoured by most people in Russia and neighboring countries. Russia, being one of the coldest countries in the world hints at why it has been the ultimate winter drink of Russia.
