Sawan is an auspicious month of the year that is widely celebrated all over the country. Also known as Shravan, it is a Hindu occasion where the devotees worship Lord Shiva to seek his blessings. The rituals involve abstaining from certain foods and maintaining a disciplined lifestyle. During Sawan, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tobacco and onion-garlic are avoided. 

As Shravan is a month-long occasion, it is important to consume nutritious food to stay energetic and nourished. There is a list of healthy foods also available that boost your energy in this season such as sabudana. Sabudana is a tiny white pearl-like granules that is known to have a lot of benefits, from improving digestion to regulating blood pressure. During fasts, it gives you the much-needed energy and keeps you active the whole day.

Sabudana Khichdi

This is a simple yet wholesome dish that is prepared with tapioca pearls, boiled potatoes, lemon juice, roasted peanuts and a few spices. Easy to prepare, it is perfect for a light lunch. Use sendha namak instead of regular salt and serve with sweet curd or coconut chutney. We usually soak tapioca pearls for three to four hours before cooking but for the best result soak them overnight. 

Sabudana Thalipeeth 

This is a type of pancake that is soft from inside and crispy from outside. Made with peanuts, mashed potatoes and sabudana, it is perfect for every meal. Sabudana thalipeeth is prepared with a very little oil that makes it light and healthier. This pancake is best served with curd, pickle or any of your favourite chutney. 

Sabudana Vada 


If you are craving for something crunchy and deep-fried, then sabudana vada is perfect for you. It is quite easy to prepare but satisfies all your cravings. It is made with sabudana, roasted peanuts, boiled potatoes along with various flavourful spices. Serve sabudana vada with mint or any other green chutney. 

Sabudana Kheer 

This versatile ingredient can also be enjoyed as a dessert. For preparing sabudana kheer, all you need is tapioca pearls, milk, ghee and sugar. For flavouring you can add dry fruits, cardamom and saffron. It is super-delicious and can be enjoyed after any meal. To make it healthier, replace sugar with jaggery.  

Sabudana Chiwda 

Sabudana chiwda is a quick and easy snack that is perfect to pair with your evening tea. All you need to do is combine soaked sabudana with cashews, raisins, roasted peanuts, salt, red chilli powder and salt. This recipe is perfect for your fasting days as it is light and provides you with energy that is required during Sawan.
