Chaat is a type of savoury snack which originates from India. It is mainly served as hors d’oeuvre and also sold in roadside tracks in stalls or food carts. It can be found all across South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
A chaat comprises has all kinds of delicious ingredients with the primary ingredient being fried dough which is mixed with various other ingredients. The ingredients are mixed and often served on a small metal plate or dried banana leaves. The original chaat is a simple and delicious mixture of potato pieces, crisp fried bread, chickpeas, various spices with the staple tamarind sauce, coriander leaves and yoghurt.
Some popular variants of chaat are alu tikkis or samosa, bhel puri, dahi puri, pani puri, dahi vada, papri chaat and sev puri. All these tangy and spicy chaats add to the popularity of Indian street food.
