Several alcoholic drinks have been around since ancient times in India. Alcohol is often enjoyed on several occasions such as weddings and other ceremonies. Different parts of India have their specific kind of local alcohol.
The indigenous tribes of Assam in Northeast India are known for their well-known rice beer Apong, which has been around for centuries. The rice beer is made of almost 30 different kinds of tree leaves, creepers, and grass, and an interesting ingredient of banana leaf and bamboo ashes.
Other popular alcoholic drinks include Handia from Jharkhand, Lugdi, a drink made of cereal in Himachal Pradesh, Mahua, a drink made of flowers, Kesar Kasturi, a royal drink from Rajasthan, and Kallu, a palm wine from Kerala.
