Hawaii is a mix of several cultures such as Filipino, Japanese, Hawaiian, Chinese, and Puerto Rican. Much of Hawaiian food culture revolves around the famous taro plant, which grows in abundance in Hawaii.
Hawaiians use various ingredients in their dishes such as poi, sugarcane, coconuts, yams, baked meat, fish, and sweet potatoes and often cook in hot underground earthy ovens. The popular dish Spam musubi is made up of a fried Spam slice on a bed of rice wrapped in a nori strip.
Other famous dishes include chicken long rice, kalua pig, lau lau, loco moco, lomi salmon, malasada, musubi and saimin, a type of noodle soup served with hot dashi.
