Pasta vs Macaroni: Difference You Should Know About

Talking about pasta, it comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, such as spaghetti, cavatelli, lasagna, ravioli, and fettuccine. A dish like pasta in many Asian countries for a long time is known as noodles while macaroni is a type of pasta which is different from other types. More comprehensive in nature, it is a shaped pasta commonly found in oval or elbow shape. Macaroni is quite similar to another type of pasta called penne. Let me tell you that pasta’s existence is reported to be in 13th century Italy while macaroni’s is the early 80’s. 

Pasta is made up of unleavened dough of wheat flour. It is a prevalent food with its unique texture, taste, appearance, and nutrition. It could be eaten as a main dish, a side dish or even as a party snack. Also used in soups and salads, we all love pasta. Isn’t it? Macaroni just takes me to back to my childhood days. Originating from Italy, macaroni could be labelled as dry pasta. One of the visible differences between pasta and macaroni is they have different shape and appearance. While pasta may come in several shapes, macaroni comes in limited shapes among which elbow is the most popular among children.

Method Of Production 

Production and extrusion process of macaroni and pasta is different. Their ingredients might be the same, but their production method is what makes them differ. While macaroni could be made using large machine, pasta could be handmade. 

Shelf Life & Popularity 

Macaroni is said to have a longer shelf life than pasta. Because of its ingredients, macaroni is more stable and could be stored for a longer duration in the refrigerator. In terms of popularity also, macaroni is a step ahead.

Macaroni Salad  


Ingredients 

  • 4 cups elbow macaroni 
  • 1 cup mayonnaise 
  • ¼ cup white vinegar 
  • 2 tbsp mustard sauce 
  • ½ black pepper powder 
  • 1 onion (chopped) 
  • 1 green bell pepper (deseeded and chopped) 

Method 

  • Heat a pan and water to it. Add a pinch of salt to the water. 
  • Cook elbow macaroni while stirring it occasionally. 
  • When looks tender yet firm, rinse in cold water and drain. 
  • Take a bowl and add mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard sauce, salt and black pepper.  
  • Also add green pepper, onion and mix. Also add macaroni and serve. 
  • Keep the salad in the fridge for 2 hours at least and serve.
