Passenger's Rant About Pricey Airport Rajma Chawal Goes Viral

We’ve all had our share of rants when it comes to overpriced food at airports and movie theatres; it goes without saying that simple foods, such as popcorn, chaats, instant noodles, chips etc are priced differently due to high operating costs, including rent, security, and logistics. Vendors must cover these costs while maintaining profit margins.

In airports especially, travellers often have fewer dining options and limited time to seek alternatives. Recently, a passenger who was using Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 said he had the "worst flight experience" of his life due to the exorbitant food prices and the flight delay. He shared his experience on Reddit where he claimed that a small portion of rajma rice is priced at Rs 400.

“I arrived at T3 terminal of Delhi airport to catch my flight which was scheduled for 10:30 am. I arrived early hoping to use the lounge but guess what, the lounge is under renovation now so there's no way to access it. But still that's not too bad right? I could just eat in one of the food store?" the Redditor said.

"Here's the thing still, there are only 3 food stores in the entire terminal and which are crazy overpriced, let me share some example of the menu. Tea - ₹ 200 Coffee - ₹ 300 Rajma Rice - ₹ 400 (quantity is smaller than your smallest bowl at home ) Burger - ₹ 300 ( this was the cheapest btw ) Mendu Vada - ₹ 300 (for three pieces)," they wrote. Adding to this, there was not enough place to sit and eat near the food stores,” the passenger added.

Of course, this isn’t the first time passengers have taken to social media to complaint about the issue of overpriced airport food, the limited options and the bad portion sizes. Most passengers are used to these limitations and have adapted some solutions so that they don’t have to go hungry at airports. Netizens shared their solutions on this Reddit post and spoke about how they deal with hunger pangs when they’re waiting at airports.

“You should bring food from home instead of crying about food prices at the airport. Airport food is expensive all over the world. It's like coming to the beach and crying about sand,” someone commented.

Another netizen shared that they carry enough food in their bags. “That's why i always carry a big hoodie and an tumbler to make my own premix tea. Bag has more food than clothes. Can't travel in peace if there's not enough food in my trollies,” they said.

“I always eat well before going taking a flight. Be it from home or at the lounge. That way I don’t have to care about the prices of the food at the airport or in the flight as I don’t bother about eating them,” another person wrote.
