Over 4.8 Lakh Biryanis Were Ordered On The New Year’s Eve

There is no doubt Indians love biryani, be it the classic chicken biryani or the vegetarian version. Loaded with a burst of bold flavours, this filling rice dish is perfect for every meal. Its craze in our country can be measured by the recent Swiggy report. According to this food delivery platform, on New Year’s Eve, over 4.8 lakh biryanis were ordered on Swiggy.

The report also said on Monday that around 1,244 units of the dish were being ordered every minute on January 31st January. Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai were the top three cities that ordered the greatest number of the dish. As per Swiggy, one in every four biryani orders were made in Hyderabad.

A few days ago, Zomato and Swiggy also revealed their yearly report on food-ordering trends, where our favourite biryani topped the list of most-ordered foods in 2023. Made with basmati rice, meat (or vegetables), and plenty of spices and herbs, this dish is said to be a gift of Mughlai cuisine. Biryani is best complimented with salan and raita.

The report further added that Swiggy Instamart, one of the most popular platforms for ordering groceries and home essentials, did 1.6x more orders per minute as compared to the recent record set during the 2023 Cricket World Cup final on November 19. The app revealed that by New Year’s evening, both Swiggy's food delivery and Instamart services had broken the records of the previous year. The delivery platform dispatched 3.50 lakh biryani orders and delivered more than 2.5 lakh pizzas across India in the last year during the same time period.

"New Year's Eve '24 broke all records across Swiggy Food and Instamart ! With the team at the stroke of midnight, we could not be happier," said Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Food Marketplace, Swiggy. "Almost a million users were active on the Swiggy app in the last hour. That's more than the number of people who will join the gym starting tomorrow," Swiggy said in a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. It was further said that more than a million people ordered food for others this year. So, when are you ordering your next biryani?
