Odisha Special Aloo Chop For Breakfast

There are different kinds of breakfast options that are you eating by people all over the country so strong Kashmir to Kanyakumari, there is a lot of variation in the kind of food that we eat on a daily basis. there are several dishes that are made in different parts of the country but they are called by completely different names. One such dish is aloo bonda.

Aloo bonda or aloo chop is a very famous breakfast dish or snack, depending on where in India is standing. In Bengal, it is eaten with puffed rice, in Maharashtra with a pao and in Odisha as a heavy breakfast meal. Odisha, which is actually very diverse treat with very diverse food habits, has many such issues that are underrated and should be explored more. The aloo chop is served as breakfast with the side of sweet chutney.It is simply delicious and at the same time it is very easy to make. While I was completing my postgraduate degree in Odisha, it was a regular breakfast that I looked forward to having. Here is a recipe of the same, as told to me by one of the chefs of our college canteen.

  • 2 Boiled potatoes
  • 1 tsp jeera powder
  • 1 tsp dhaniya powder
  • 1 tsp haldi 
  • 2 tsp red chilli powder 
  • Chaat masala 
  • 1 cup besan
  • Salt as per taste
  • Oil for frying

Method

  • In a mixing bowl, add some basin and water and make a thick batter. 
  • In the batter, add some haldi and salt to give it a colour and flavour. Keep the batter aside.
  • In another bowl, mix the boiled potatoes with all the powdered spices.
  • Make balls out of the spicy mashed potatoes and keep them aside.
  • Now, heat up oil in a frying pan.
  • Dip the potato balls one by one into the besan batter.
  • Next, fry them in the oil for couple of minutes on very high flame, then low flame.
  • This helps the chop cook from inside too.
  • Fry till both the sides are golden and cooked.

Serve this Delicious aloo chop with the chutney of your choice.
