Munawar Faruqui: What I Eat In A Day

Meals throughout the day

As the sun rises high in the sky, my day begins with a rather unconventional routine. My nights extend well into the early morning hours, and so, my mornings only come to life post 12 pm or 1 pm. However, this unique schedule doesn't deter my love for food, and I embark on a delightful culinary journey every single day.

Brunch is my first indulgence. A mix of breakfast and lunch, it serves as my first meal of the day. Sometimes it's a dosa, while other times, I might savour some keema and roti or perhaps a warm and satisfying pav. If I'm in the mood for something lighter, I opt for eggs to kick-start my day.

As the clock strikes 2 pm, I find myself in the "eating window," which means I have limited opportunities to indulge in meals. For lunch, I usually go for something quick and not always the healthiest option. Pani puri or other similar delights sometimes become my lunch companion. Though not ideal, I try to balance it out with a wholesome dinner later.

Dinner is the time when I prioritise home-cooked food once again. Whether it's a flavorful meat gravy served with rice or roti or a comforting bowl of dal accompanied by masala bhindi, this is my version of a perfect meal. I don't believe in having small meals; I eat until my stomach is full, and my mind is content.

Fruits add a refreshing touch to my day, and I enjoy indulging in the natural sweetness of pomegranates, watermelons, mangoes, pineapples, and bananas. They provide a healthy balance to my otherwise diverse culinary preferences.

Favourite foods

One thing that never fails to excite me is a refreshing glass of coconut water. Whenever I spot it, I can't resist grabbing a sip. Chips are another favourite, although I try not to overindulge in them. But, when it comes to sev puri, it's a different story altogether. This mouthwatering delicacy from the streets of Mumbai is an absolute must for me. Whether it's readily available or not, I'll go to great lengths to find and savour it, relishing the perfect blend of tangy and spicy flavours.

When I'm visiting my sister in Mumbai, my taste buds rejoice. Home-cooked food from her kitchen is a divine experience. At least three times a week, I head over to her place, where she serves up a tantalising spread of dal chawal, accompanied by papad, achaar, and some lip-smacking chutney. This combination brings back nostalgic memories of our childhood, and it remains my all-time favourite.

While I am working, I often grab a burger for convenience, but that's not my go-to meal. The real delight is found in the dry fruits I keep in my car. These nutritious treats are perfect for snacking on the go, giving me the energy to power through my busy days.

Indulgences

When it comes to guilty pleasures, seekh kebabs and parathas hold a special place in my heart. These delectable treats, despite being oily and indulgent, are an irresistible craving that often tempts me during late-night hours. Sometimes, I give in to my desires and savour their rich flavours.

I'm not much of a tea or coffee person, but I make an exception when khakhras or leftover roti snacks are on the table. A hot cup of tea complements these dishes perfectly, adding to the joy of the moment.

Desserts

As for desserts, Indian sweets hold a special allure for me. Be it kaju katli, Bengali sweets, jalebi, gulab jamun, kheer, or besan ke laddu, I savour them all with equal enthusiasm. Each sweet dish tells a story of tradition, culture, and love, leaving my taste buds longing for more.

Food on cheat days

If I were to throw dieting out of the window and indulge freely, my first choice would be a sumptuous plate of mutton biryani. The aromatic spices, tender meat, and flavorful rice make it the ultimate treat that I can never resist.

While I often contemplate dieting and conscious eating, my love for food and my passion for exploring diverse flavours often take precedence. Food is not just nourishment for me; it is an adventure that I embark on daily, seeking pleasure and delight in every bite. It brings joy, comfort, and a sense of connection, reminding me of the cherished moments spent with loved ones, especially during those heartwarming visits to my sister's home. This love for food, coupled with my diverse culinary choices, makes every day a delightful journey filled with unforgettable tastes and flavours.
