Very few viral recipes have been as worthy of our time as the ramen carbonara. Who’d have thought making Italian carbonara with ramen noodles would emerge as the favourite pastime of new-age chefs? Although, what if it could be made even better with better consistency and a more seamless ratio? Turns out there are some basic switch-ups that can fine-tune the carbonara recipe if you’re using store-bought ramen packets for it.
First, let’s brush up on what the ramen carbonara really is. It’s a creative fusion dish that combines elements of traditional Italian Carbonara with the convenience and affordability of instant ramen noodles. To make it, you typically start by cooking instant ramen noodles according to the package instructions. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, grated Parmesan cheese, and black pepper to create a creamy sauce.
Once the noodles are cooked, drain them and immediately toss them with the sauce mixture. The residual heat from the noodles will cook the eggs, creating a creamy coating that clings to the noodles. In a word, it’s perfect. However, have you ever struggled with the seasoning packet while making this recipe at home? If you’re throwing away the seasoning packet, while you make the carbonara, you’re doing it wrong. There is in fact, a way to use the seasoning as social media chefs are discovering.
Utilise The Ramen Seasoning
Using the ramen seasoning will add some heat to the carbonara, but nothing too potent since the spice component would be sanded down in a big way, thanks to the cheesy sauce. Here’s what you need to do with the seasoning packet. Once the egg-parmesan sauce is ready, toss the boiled ramen in the carbonara sauce but don’t toss it yet. Add in any sauteed chicken, bacon or veggies you may have prepared, if any.
Now take the seasoning packet, sprinkle half of it and toss it well. If the seasoning is too spice-forward, sprinkle a little and see if it’s enough heat for your palate. If not, you can use the whole packet and toss it. It may become too stiff if you use the whole seasoning packet. In that case, you can add some leftover pasta water and give it a mix. Adding the seasoning will change its colour as well, and will lend an orange-ish hue but you will be able to get the best of both flavours!
