Low Oil Banana Chips In An Air Fryer For A Grand Vishu Sadhya Spread

Within the grand scale of a sadhya feast for Vishu, the details matter as much as the star dishes of the meal. While preparations such as avail, mor curry and thoran emerge as popular favourites, condiments such as inji-puli and banana chips contribute flavour and textural boosts. Although mostly deep-fried, paper thin slices of raw banana also adapt well to crisp up in an air fryer. Using USHA’s Smart Air Fryer ensures optimal utilisation of finite resources such as LPG as well as cooking oil—enabling the making of large batches of chips with half the effort but just as authentic as the real deal! Air fried banana chips, beyond its feature on the feast, is also a healthy, calorie-conscious snack; this means that experimenting with a variety of flavouring agents and blends is also made possible to introduce variety.

  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste

  • Peel the bananas and thinly slice them vertically or in roundels using a mandolin.
  • Soak the slices in water for 10 minutes before patting them dry using a kitchen towel.
  • Preheat the air fryer at 180°C for five minutes while tossing the dried banana slices with oil, salt and turmeric powder.
  • Lay each slice in a singular layer within the basket leaving a reasonable gap between each one.

  • Once removed from the basket, repeat the process until there is enough to serve.

Tips To Make Perfectly Air Fried Banana Chips

Choosing Bananas

Opt for firm, high quality bananas that are devoid of black spots or patches. Avoid bananas that might feel soft to touch or mushy, since they might lead to soggy chips.

Seasoning

A light coating of oil and spices is enough to evenly flavour the chips—since too much seasoning might take away from the flavour of the key ingredient. Experiment with spice blends such as za’atar, peri peri mix, garlic powder and even fresh herbs like chives or rosemary.

Air Frying

Steer clear from over-crowding the air fryer basket while frying the chips. Instead, opt to do them in smaller batches to make sure they are crispy and have a longer shelf life. The slices must be patted dry thoroughly to avoid moisture retention that might lead them to become soft and not crunchy. Do not cook the chips beyond the suggested time since they tend to crisp further while cooling to room temperature.
