Makaibari tea garden is Darjeeling district’s only tea garden that claims to have never been owned by the British Raj. The test estate, owned by Luxmi Group, has now provided you with an opportunity to brew their limited edition’s unique flavour in your teapot. Makaibari has made a special collector's item, Verleni 1947, available for the people from midnight of August 14th. This special blend comes from some of the oldest tea bushes in the Makaibari gardens that were reportedly planted in 1947, the year India got its independence.
It needs to be mentioned here that Makaibari Tea Estates in Kurseong was set up in 1859 by Girish Chandra Banerjee. The tea estate is now under Luxmi Tea And The Group, a company that was started over 100 years ago by freedom fighter PC Chatterjee. Chatterjee used tea as a weapon against the British in India’s movement of self-reliance. He started cultivating tea independently in the colonial era without the help of management agencies or advisers from London. Several Assamese and Bengali freedom fighters and students also joined Luxmi.
Verleni 1947 is harvested from Chinese tea bushes that have a strong muscatel, floral, and fruity flavour. Luxmi Tea’s CEO, Atul Rastogi, said to a leading publication, "Only 1,000 packs of the limited edition Verleni 1947 will be available from August 15". As per sources, Makaibari is spread across 1,400 acres of plantation and reportedly produces around 1 lakh kg of tea annually. So, if you want to have the true taste of Independence while celebrating the 77th year of India’s fredom, here is your chance!
