As we celebrate International Yoga Day, it is an opportune time to explore the various aspects of yoga and its profound influence on our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. While the practice of yoga encompasses asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation, it is essential to recognize that yoga extends beyond the mat and into our everyday lives. One such aspect of yoga that significantly impacts our overall health is the concept of a yogic diet.

So, what is yogic diet?

According to Ayurveda, a yogic diet is a dietary approach that aligns with the principles of both Ayurveda and yoga. It emphasises the consumption of foods that promote balance, vitality, and spiritual growth. The yogic diet is designed to support physical and mental well-being, enhance spiritual practices, and maintain overall harmony in the body and mind.

Principles of yogic diet

Sattvic Foods: 

The yogic diet primarily focuses on sattvic foods, which are considered pure, light, and conducive to clarity and balance. Sattvic foods are believed to promote inner peace, harmony, and spiritual growth. Examples of sattvic foods include fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy products (in moderation), and herbal teas.

Fresh and Organic Foods: 

It is recommended to consume fresh, seasonal, and organic foods whenever possible. Fresh foods contain more vital energy and nutrients, while organic foods are free from harmful chemicals, pesticides, and additives.

Mindful Eating: 

Practising mindfulness while eating is an essential aspect of the yogic diet. It involves being fully present, savouring each bite, and cultivating gratitude for the nourishment received. Avoid rushing through meals or eating while distracted, as this can hinder digestion and nutrient absorption.

Moderation: 

The yogic diet promotes moderation in food consumption. Overeating or indulging in excessive quantities of food can lead to sluggishness, heaviness, and imbalance. Eating in moderation helps maintain energy levels, supports digestion, and prevents the accumulation of toxins.

Ahimsa (Non-violence): 

Ahimsa is a fundamental principle of yoga and Ayurveda, emphasizing non-violence and compassion towards all living beings. A yogic diet encourages vegetarian or vegan choices, avoiding the consumption of meat, fish, and other animal products. Plant-based foods are considered lighter, easier to digest, and more aligned with the yogic path.

Personalised Approach:

Ayurveda recognises that each individual has a unique constitution and specific dietary needs. Therefore, a yogic diet takes into account an individual's dosha (mind-body constitution) and tailors food choices accordingly. Foods and spices that balance specific doshas are recommended to maintain overall harmony and well-being
